With 1% and 2% thoriated tungsten electrodes, arc starting is more uncomplicated and wider current ranges can be utilized. That is because of the addition of thoria. Thoria is not going to turn out to be molten, and it reduces the tendency of the electrode to stay or freeze to the work. A 2% thoriated tungsten electrode has a longer life because of the added thoria. Thoriated tungsten electrodes have a higher resistance to contamination on AC and DC settings and won’t result in contamination if by chance touched to the work.
